Every culture must confront its excesses; each must contest its injustices; and everyone needs to reaffirm those core values without which no government can claim legitimacy. How the present unfolds into the future largely depends on how we the people act at these pivotal moments that shape our destiny.
Despotism is the cancer that breeds division and spreads hate; our forebears united to oppose it. It is this all-powerful authoritarianism that we once again confront with common sense and wise measures, for the love of our country, all the people living in it, and future generations—so they can enjoy its journey and strive to build a more perfect Union.
Take heed: in this crisis, those who shrink from the genuine service of our country pave the way for the very tyranny that rallied our founders to rebel.
Let the word go out: those who stand strong now, who express their opposition in words and deeds, deserve the love and thanks of every American.
